Saaremaa Ferry Out of Service Due to Engine Troubles
In a turn of events affecting ferry operations between Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.), the 'Saaremaa' has been taken out of service following an unexpected failure of a temporary engine repair. This situation has left the route without any available ferries, as the 'Confederation' is currently undergoing hull maintenance in Pictou. Over the summer, the 'Saaremaa' has experienced issues with two of its four primary engines. While a temporary solution had been implemented for one of the engines, another was undergoing more extensive repairs. During this time, the ferry was operating on only three engines. However, during its last run on the evening of September 23, 2024, the temporary fix failed, reducing the operational engines to just two. Consequently, the ferry had to be docked for further engine repairs, with technicians from the engine's manufacturing company already present aboard when the situation escalated. Plans are in place to finalize the ongoing permanent repairs, which are expected to enable the vessel to return to service within two to three days. Following these developments, Northumberland Ferries has announced the cancellation of all sailings until at least September 27.
Technical Glitch Affects Saaremaa Ferry Crossings
On August 31, the ferry 'Saaremaa' encountered a technical issue that led to the cancellation of multiple sailings. Passengers should note that departures from Wood Islands scheduled for 11:45 a.m., 3:15 p.m., and 6:30 p.m. were affected. Similarly, sailings from Caribou, Nova Scotia at 10:00 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 5:00 p.m. have also been cancelled. We sincerely apologize for the disruption and appreciate your understanding during this time.
Mechanical Issues Cause Early Morning Ferry Cancellations in Northumberland
On August 15, 2024, Northumberland Ferries announced the cancellation of two early morning crossings between Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia due to mechanical difficulties with the vessel 'Saaremaa 1'. The affected sailings included the 7 a.m. departure from Caribou, Nova Scotia, and the 8:30 a.m. sailing from Wood Islands, Prince Edward Island. Fortunately, service resumed normal operations by 10 a.m. that same day. It’s worth noting that some sailings of the 'Saaremaa 1' had also been cancelled the previous day, August 14, due to similar technical issues.
