A fire incident occurred on June 17, 2019, at 10:40 PM aboard the vessel 'Key Light', which was situated approximately one kilometer offshore from the Port of Aarhus. Authorities from East Jutland police and the fire brigade were dispatched to the scene following reports of a chemical fire. The crew of 23 attempted to extinguish the flames in two barrels containing phosphorus hydrogen; however, these efforts were hindered by the release of toxic gases. To manage the situation, a specialized unit from Vest was deployed via a pilot boat from Aarhus, and by 2 AM, the fire was successfully contained using cement powder. The fire appeared to have originated from an explosion caused by pressure buildup in a bin, compounded by insufficient ventilation. Following the incident, the bin was ventilated, and temperature levels were carefully monitored. At the time of the fire, the 'Key Light' was anchored at coordinates 56° 8.45' N 010° 16.80' E. The vessel had previously docked at Aarhus on June 6 at 6:50 AM, carrying approximately 28,000 metric tonnes of Brazilian Hipro Soyabean Meal. An inspection upon hatch opening revealed an insect infestation, necessitating fumigation on June 7 prior to discharging. The vessel was then moved to an anchorage outside the port for de-fumigation, which was scheduled to commence on June 17. Reports suggest that the fumigant, phosphorus, caught fire in two drums but did not ignite the cargo itself.
