On December 20, 2020, at 11:50 p.m., the ferry 'Safira Nusantara' encountered a grounding incident near Merak Port while attempting to dock at Pier 4. The vessel was making its way from Bakahueni Port in Lampung when the incident occurred, reportedly due to a malfunction of the buoy lights on a nearby red buoy. Following the grounding, two tugboats were dispatched to assist the stranded ferry; however, operations were complicated by strong winds and currents in the Sunda Strait. As the water levels dropped, the recovery efforts faced additional delays. At the time of the grounding, the ferry was transporting 82 vehicles. Fortunately, by 8 a.m. on December 21, the tide began to rise, and by 9 a.m., the 'Safira Nusantara' was successfully refloated and subsequently docked at Pier 5 of Merak Harbor. On January 14, 2019, at approximately 3:30 p.m., a significant fire erupted on the 'Safira Nusantara' while undergoing maintenance at the PT Samudra Marine Indonesia Shipyard, located in the Bojonegara Subdistrict of Serang Regency. The blaze, which ignited during welding operations adjacent to the ship's bridge, caused extensive damage to both the driver's rest room and the bridge itself.
