BC Ferries Faces Disruptions as 'Salish Orca' Cancels Key Sailings
In a recent update, BC Ferries has announced the cancellation of two crucial sailings of the vessel 'Salish Orca' on the Powell River-to-Comox route, scheduled for February 17, 2024. The cancellations, resulting from technical difficulties with the ship's propulsion system, impacted the 3:25 p.m. departure from Comox and the 5:15 p.m. departure from Powell River. Furthermore, it was reported that the 7:10 p.m. sailing from Comox and the 8:45 p.m. sailing from Powell River also faced the risk of cancellation. Shockingly, passengers received notification of these changes only 15 minutes prior to the intended departure times. Thankfully, the 'Salish Orca' was able to resume its normal route later the same day, ensuring continued service for travelers.
Thruster Malfunction Hits Salish Orca Ferry Off Powell River
On September 9, 2021, the 'Salish Orca' experienced a bow thruster failure while navigating near Powell River. Fortunately, the ferry successfully offloaded its passengers before continuing its journey to Comox, thanks to assistance from a tugboat that aided in docking at both locations. B.C. Ferries was granted special permission by Transport Canada to utilize the tug for safe docking operations. The ferry was carrying 281 passengers on its route to Powell River, with an additional 147 passengers on the return trip to Comox. As of now, it's unclear when the 'Salish Orca' will return to service. In light of the situation, B.C. Ferries is advising travelers to stay updated on ferry schedules in the upcoming days. Meanwhile, the 'Salish Eagle' has been reassigned from its usual run to the Tsawwassen-Southern Gulf Islands route to provide additional service on the Comox-Powell River route starting September 10. Additionally, on the morning of September 10, the 'Salish Orca' departed Comox heading to Tsawwassen where engineers and technicians will assess the vessel and create a repair strategy, aiming for effective repairs while the ferry is docked.
