Bulk Carrier Samjohn Legacy Averts Disaster in Narvik

Apr 08, 2015 12:32

On April 7, 2015, at 7 p.m., the bulk carrier 'Samjohn Legacy,' which was docked in Narvik, broke free from its moorings amid fierce wind gusts reaching 26.4 m/sec. As the vessel began to drift into the harbor basin, it made contact with the newly constructed LKAB quay 7, coming alarmingly close to colliding with the nearby LKAB quays 3 and 4. Thankfully, the situation was promptly managed, and within an hour, the vessel was under control. Two LKAB tugboats swiftly intervened, steering the 'Samjohn Legacy' out of the harbor basin and securing it outside Framnesodden, aided by three additional tugboats. Following the incident, an inspection of LKAB quay 7 revealed that while some rubber materials on the structure had sustained significant wear, the quay itself was largely unharmed.
