Samos Warrior Rescues Migrants Off Gran Canaria
On February 6, 2022, at approximately 11 p.m., the bulk carrier 'Samos Warrior' came to the aid of a migrant boat carrying three individuals of North African descent. The incident occurred south of Gran Canaria while the vessel was en route from Richards Bay to Las Palmas. Crew members aboard the 'Samos Warrior' spotted a red flare on the port side, prompting them to alert the authorities at Salvamento Marítimo. In response, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Las Palmas dispatched the SAR helicopter Helimer 201 along with the SAR boat 'Salvamar Macondo' to the location. Once on scene, the three male adults were safely transported to Gran Canaria, where they arrived in good health at the Arguineguín pier. Upon disembarkation, they confirmed that they were the sole occupants of the boat, marking a successful rescue operation by the crew and rescue services.
