Rudder Malfunction Disrupts Ferry Operations Near Patmos
On July 9, the Port Authority of Patmos received a distress notification regarding the 'Saonissos', a ferry carrying 61 passengers, which experienced a rudder malfunction as it approached the port. The vessel was on its routine route connecting Kalymnos with Leros, Leipsos, Patmos, Arkious, Agathonisi, and Pythagorion when the incident occurred. Fortunately, the 'Saonissos' managed to dock safely at Patmos. In response to the situation, the Port Authority issued a precautionary order halting the ferry's departure until repairs could be completed. The vessel had departed from Rhodes on its scheduled route to Symi but experienced a malfunction in its port side main engine while navigating northwest of Rhodes, all without requesting assistance. At the time of the incident, the ferry was without passengers, transporting only one truck and crew members numbering 20. Due to the challenging weather conditions in the region, the ship opted to anchor in the safe harbor of Kallithea, Rhodes. On the morning of December 31, the 'Saonisos' successfully resumed operations, sailing under its own power back to the port of Rhodes, where it docked without further complications. Initially, the Central Port Authority of Rhodes imposed a departure ban on the vessel. Following necessary repairs and the subsequent presentation of a seaworthiness certificate from the overseeing classification society, the ban was lifted, allowing the ferry to continue its regular voyages to destinations including Tilos, Nisyros, Kos, and Kalymnos.
