Pirates Launch Attack on Tanker Savvy Near Singapore
In the early hours of May 9, 2012, at approximately 0208 hours, the vessel Tanker Savvy found itself under assault by a group of pirates roughly 30 nautical miles northeast of Horsburgh Lighthouse, located at coordinates 1°38.0'N, 104°50.0'E. Reports indicate that between eight to ten armed assailants approached the ship using two high-speed boats. Equipped with weapons and machetes, the pirates managed to board the tanker through the poop deck with a portable ladder. Quick to respond, the master of Tanker Savvy activated the alarm, executed evasive maneuvers, and efficiently sealed all routes leading to the accommodation blocks and engine room. Despite the boarding attempt, the pirates were unable to access these critical areas and retreated in their boats by around 0230 hours. The incident was promptly communicated to Singapore’s Port Operations Control Centre (POCC), which serves as the ReCAAP Focal Point for Singapore, ensuring swift action and reporting within maritime safety protocols.
