Suez Canal Authorities Detain Vessels After Series of Maritime Incidents
On July 17, the Suez Canal Authorities took action by detaining the vessels 'Panamax Alexander', 'Aeneas', 'Sakizaya Kalon', and 'Osios David'. These ships were seized due to unresolved fees related to tug services, damaged navigation buoys, and costs associated with their refloating and maritime route repairs. Subsequently, these vessels were towed to Bitter Lakes for further processing. The situation had a ripple effect on maritime traffic; on July 15, 18 ships part of the southbound convoy were anchored at Great Bitter Lakes and resumed their journey the following day around 7 a.m. However, only 11 out of 29 ships in the convoy successfully entered the canal that day, while others remained anchored at Port Said, awaiting transit arrangements. Meanwhile, just six of the northbound convoy managed to navigate into the canal, leaving many vessels at Great Bitter Lakes and 12 others at Suez anchorages. Approximately 25 vessels in the northbound convoy found themselves at Suez anchorage on July 16, pending SCA transit arrangements.
Suez Canal Incident: Container Ship Grounding Triggers Major Collision
On July 15, 2018, at approximately 6:30 p.m., the container vessel 'Aeneas' experienced a grounding incident while navigating a southbound convoy in the Suez Canal. The ship, which was on its journey from Southampton to Singapore, was successfully refloated shortly after the incident and subsequently towed to southern Suez anchorage. During the grounding event, ships 'Panamax Alexander', 'Sakizaya Kalon', and 'Osios David' collided with each other as they were also part of the same southbound convoy. 'Aeneas' was positioned as the 20th ship within a total of 27 vessels in the convoy. While several ships managed to avoid a direct impact with 'Aeneas', chaos ensued among them, resulting in a significant bottleneck in the southern section of the canal which remained closed for several hours. 'Osios David' was later able to sail to Suez and is currently anchored there, whereas 'Panamax Alexander' and 'Sakizaya Kalon' were towed to the Great Bitter Lake for anchorage. Compounding the situation, while being towed to the Great Bitter Lake, 'Panamax Alexander' collided again, this time with the container ship 'NYK Orpheus'.
