Incident Involving Scan Fjord in Trondheim Port

Sep 17, 2013 09:40

On September 16, 2013, the freighter 'Scan Fjord', which had arrived from Sandnes, experienced a significant issue while docked in Trondheim. Just before 10:30 p.m., authorities were alerted to a leak that caused the vessel to tilt. By 11:45 p.m., the ship had developed a starboard list of 15 degrees, prompting swift action from local emergency services. The fire department arrived on the scene, and the Civil Defence team deployed two dewatering pumps to mitigate the situation. Their efforts successfully reduced the water level inside the ship by approximately half a meter within half an hour. By 12:45 a.m. on September 17, it was confirmed that the pumps were removing more water than was entering the vessel, with the leak estimated at about 150 liters per minute, while the pumping capacity reached 1,000 liters per minute. The listing issue was rectified, and the leak was effectively patched. The fireboat 'Anne Kathrine' was also dispatched to assist. At the time of the incident, the 'Scan Fjord' was preparing to depart the dock after loading approximately 52.5 tons of rebar steel when the crew discovered the hull breach, believed to have been caused by a metal object piercing through the hull.
