Scot Bay Runs Aground in River Teign Incident

Apr 11, 2025 10:33

On April 10, 2025, at approximately 6 a.m., the cargo vessel 'Scot Bay', carrying a load of animal feed and with a crew of eight, found itself aground in the River Teign, near Teignmouth. The unfortunate grounding occurred as the ship was navigating towards the port from IJmuiden, specifically at coordinates 50° 33' N 003° 30' W. The vessel developed a slight list to its starboard side as it approached the harbor. The Teignmouth Harbour Commission promptly responded to the situation and had officials at the scene, collaborating with various partners to facilitate a safe recovery of the stranded ship. With the tide receding, the 'Scot Bay' remained stuck until the next high tide at approximately 6 p.m., when efforts could resume to dislodge it. During this period, other vessels were advised to maintain a safe distance from the grounding site while salvage operations were conducted by the tug 'Teign C' (MMSI: 235082804). After a challenging day, the 'Scot Bay' was successfully floated and reached its destination at the port of Teignmouth early in the morning on April 11, at around 4 a.m. For further details, photographs, and video footage of the incident, check out these links: [BBC News](https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cwy00m4wj0no), [Mid Devon Advertiser](https://www.middevonadvertiser.co.uk/news/ship-aground-off-teignmouth-782599), [Mirror](https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/teignmouth-harbour-ship-run-aground-35034102?utm_source=mynewsassistant.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=embedded_search_item_desktop), [YouTube Video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scRldYkTiwU&embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fshipwrecklog.com%2F&source_ve_path=MjM4NTE).

Oct 17, 2019 13:13

On October 15, 2019, at 7 p.m., the vessel 'Scot Isles', carrying a crew of eight and 690 tonnes of timber, experienced an engine cooling issue while navigating from Wicklow to Belfast. Located at coordinates 54° 15' 17" N and 005° 33' 10" W, the ship was forced to halt for repairs. Scot Isles Encounters Stability Issues in Turbulent Waters Near Gotland

Dec 24, 2012 14:09

On December 23, 2012, the cargo vessel 'Scot Isles' departed from Riga, en route to Rochester. However, while navigating between Gotland and Latvia, approximately 23 miles Southeast of Östergarn, Gotland, the ship experienced a significant list to starboard due to a shift in its deck cargo of swan timber. A distress call was issued via radio on December 24, 2012, at 8 a.m., prompting a swift emergency response. A rescue helicopter launched from Visby reached the site at 09:10 a.m. to stand ready for evacuation if necessary. The vessel 'Regina Baltica' arrived to assist with communication efforts while a lifeboat from Värnburg was dispatched but was later called back. Additionally, the merchant ship 'Aila' remained on standby during the situation. The captain made the critical decision to keep the crew aboard, opting to maneuver to Liepaja under their own power, as he assessed that conditions were stable enough with a consistent 15-degree list, despite harsh sea states with 3-5 meter waves and winds reaching 15 m/s. The Swedish Coast Guard actively monitored the incident using the surveillance aircraft KBV 502, while patrol boat 'KBV 503' and a rescue ship from Liepaja were directed towards the troubled vessel. By 11 a.m. on December 24, the 'Scot Isles' was around 45 miles from Liepaja, with the Riga Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre taking over operational command. Efforts were underway to secure a berth for the 'Scot Isles' in Liepaja. The cargo ship successfully docked at the port at 4:40 p.m., bringing a tense situation to a close.
