Charges Filed Against Two Men for Assault and Burglary on Yacht in Kinsale
In Kinsale, two men are confronting legal challenges after being charged with assault and burglary related to incidents aboard the 'Scout' superyacht. During a recent session at Bandon District Court, Judge James McNulty set bail conditions for both individuals, requiring their return to court on June 24, 2024. The accused, Selvin Foley, 21, from Coach House on Eastern Road, Kinsale, and Matthew Kiely, 22, from St. Elkins Crescent, Kinsale, were implicated in events that allegedly unfolded on the morning of June 21. Reportedly, the duo boarded the yacht multiple times at Castlepark Marina with the intent to commit theft. While on board, in the company of around 15 crew members and several guests, they are accused of pilfering a substantial amount of alcohol before consuming it upon reaching land. In a subsequent return to the vessel around 4 a.m., the men were discovered wandering aboard by the captain, who confronted them. This encounter led to an assault on the captain, but crew members quickly intervened and detained the pair until local gardaà arrived. Bail was unopposed for Mr. Kiely, whereas gardaà contested Mr. Foley's bail due to his existing bail for a previous serious charge. As a condition of his bail, Mr. Kiely must return to his father's home in Tipperary immediately, maintain a nightly curfew from 9 p.m. to 8 a.m., and report in at Cahir Garda Station three times a week. Similarly, Mr. Foley must reside at his father's home in Kinsale, keep a curfew from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m., and check in daily at Kinsale Garda Station. Both individuals were released on their own bonds of €1,000 and are set to reappear at Bandon District Court on July 12.
