Bulk Carrier 'Sea Champion' Safely Reaches Aden After Misdirected Houthi Attack
On February 20, the bulk carrier 'Sea Champion' docked at the port of Aden following a harrowing incident in the Red Sea, where it was mistakenly targeted by missile strikes attributed to Houthi militia forces. The vessel, transporting corn from Rosario to Aden, experienced two attacks on February 19 that left a window damaged but fortunately resulted in no injuries among the crew members. Currently, 'Sea Champion' is in the process of unloading a portion of its substantial cargo of 9,229 tonnes of corn in Aden. After this operation, the ship is set to continue its journey to Hodeidah to offload the remaining 31,000 tonnes.
Escalating Houthi Attacks Raise Concerns in the Red Sea
On the evening of February 19, 2024, Houthi forces claimed responsibility for targeting three vessels within a 24-hour timeframe, notably including the British-registered 'Rubymar', the US-owned 'Sea Champion', and the 'Navis Fortuna'. The maritime security consultancy, Ambrey, revealed earlier that a Greek-flagged, US-owned bulk carrier endured two missile strikes in a span of just two hours while transiting the Gulf adjoining the Red Sea. The vessel initially reported a missile impact, followed swiftly by another projectile that struck the water perilously close to the ship. The ship’s captain noted damage from shrapnel and paintwork deterioration in the wake of the second strike, as confirmed by the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). The 'Sea Champion', with a crew of 23, was en route from Argentina to Aden with a cargo of grain when it encountered a missile attack in the Gulf of Aden, followed by a projectile coming down 10 to 15 meters from its starboard side. Remarkably, no injuries or significant damages were reported, allowing the ship to maintain its course. Meanwhile, the 'Navis Fortuna' was on approach to the Bab Al-Mandeb Strait during the afternoon when a report of an incident emerged. The UKMTO also acknowledged another report of an encounter occurring 60 nautical miles north of Djibouti, further emphasizing the area’s increasing vulnerability amid rising tensions.
