Serious Collision on Kiel Canal Involving 'Sea Explorer'
Early morning on February 28, 2026, a significant maritime incident unfolded on the Kiel Canal when a multipurpose vessel collided with the 'Sea Explorer', which was traveling from Oskarshamn to Misrata. The collision took place at approximately 3:25 a.m. near Brunsbüttel, specifically at the Dückerswisch passing place. Reports indicate that as the unidentified vessel approached the passing area, it lost control for reasons still under investigation and came to a halt across the canal. Meanwhile, the 'Sea Explorer' was navigating westward towards the Brunsbüttel lock. Despite the captain's prompt efforts to execute a full reverse maneuver, the collision was unavoidable. The impact occurred when the bow of the westbound vessel struck the port stern of the eastbound vessel. Fortunately, both crews emerged unscathed, and emergency responders confirmed no water ingress or fuel leaks. The local water police have launched an investigation into the incident, while the German Social Accident Insurance Institution for the Transport Sector (BG Verkehr) has mandated both vessels to halt navigation temporarily. Fortunately, both ships were cleared and allowed to continue their journeys later the same day.
Sea Explorer Faced Engine Trouble in Kiel Canal Lock
On February 26, 2017, at 11:25 p.m., the cargo vessel 'Sea Explorer' encountered an unexpected engine failure while approaching the New Northern Lock of the Kiel Canal in Brunsbüttel. The ship, which was on its way from Porto Empedocle to Kaskinen, ended up drifting sideways at the lock's entrance. To aid the situation, the tug 'Parat' was summoned for assistance. Following the incident, 'Sea Explorer' was directed back to the Elbe roads. After the ship's engine was successfully restarted, it made another attempt to navigate into the canal on February 27 at approximately 1:40 a.m. This time, the entry was smooth, and the vessel is anticipated to arrive in Finland on March 2 at 3 a.m. The incident highlights the challenges of maritime navigation and the importance of prompt assistance in emergency situations.
