Escalating Security Concerns: Three Armed Robbery Incidents in Singapore Strait

Oct 26, 2020 19:28

On October 25, 2020, the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia (ReCAAP) reported a concerning series of three armed robbery incidents targeting ships in the Singapore Strait. These events occurred within a span of just two hours and were notably close to each other, highlighting the urgent need for heightened vigilance in maritime safety. The vessels involved were the 'Seajourney', 'A Racer', and 'El Matador'. Fortunately, all crews were reported safe and no valuables were stolen in these incidents. In a specific account from one of the vessels, the Master disclosed that a perpetrator was seen near the entrance to the engine room at approximately 001°14'34.8”N, 104°04'16.8”E, around 2309 hours local time. Prompt action was taken as the alarm was raised, leading to a thorough search of the ship, but the intruder had already escaped, likely frightened off by the raised alarm. ReCAAP has urged all vessels operating in the region to maintain high levels of alertness and adopt additional safety measures while navigating these waters. Furthermore, the organization called upon the coastal nations to enhance maritime patrols and law enforcement efforts to mitigate such risks. In response to the incidents, both the Singapore Police Coast Guard and Indonesian authorities were alerted, and a safety navigational broadcast was issued to inform other vessels in the vicinity.
