Daewoo Launches World's First Natural Gas-Powered LNG Carrier Following Successful Trials
Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) has triumphantly concluded the trial run of a groundbreaking vessel, the world's first LNG carrier powered by directly injected natural gas. The innovative vessel is set to be handed over to its client, Canadian shipping company Teekay, in January. This pioneering accomplishment is anticipated to bolster DSME's standing in the maritime industry and provide a much-needed boost to the shipbuilder as it navigates financial challenges. The vessel, named Creole, has a remarkable capacity of 173,400 cubic meters and recently completed an intensive 15-day sea trial in the Korea Strait. Officials from DSME reported that Creole met all the operational standards set by Teekay, showcasing exceptional performance in critical areas such as high-pressure natural gas engine functionality, gas storage and transport, as well as the advanced partial re-liquefaction system (PRS). Equipped with the latest innovations, including a next-generation fuel gas supply system and PRS, this vessel achieves 30% greater fuel efficiency while significantly reducing emissions. This efficiency translates into a potential annual savings of $5 million in fuel costs for its owner. Demonstrating its competitive prowess in the LNG sector, DSME secured 35 out of the 47 orders for LNG carriers with a capacity of 160,000 cubic meters or more placed with Korean shipyards last year.
