AP Møller-Mærsk Offloads Entire LNG Fleet to Marubeni and Teekay

Oct 14, 2011 10:19

Danish maritime giant AP Møller-Mærsk has finalized an agreement to divest its complete fleet of liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessels to a partnership between Marubeni Corporation of Japan and Teekay LNG Partners, a Canadian entity under Teekay Corporation based in Bermuda. This strategic sale encompasses Maersk’s extensive LNG shipping operations, including a total of eight vessels: six owned outright and two in which Maersk holds a 26% ownership stake. The deal, valued at approximately $1.402 billion, is anticipated to conclude by the end of 2023. It includes all vessels from Maersk LNG, with the joint venture stake being split 52% in favor of Teekay LNG and 48% owned by Marubeni. The fully owned LNG carriers are comprised of the Maersk Methane, Maersk Arwa, and Maersk Marib, all constructed in 2008, the Maersk Magellan and Woodside Donaldson launched in 2009, and the Maersk Meridian from 2010. Additionally, Maersk owns a 26% share in two more LNG vessels: the Maersk Ras Laffan, launched in 2004, and the Maersk Qatar, which debuted in 2006. Presently, five of the eight ships are under long-term charter agreements, averaging a remaining term of approximately 17 years, with options for extensions. The remaining three vessels are also under leases, though with shorter durations. This significant transaction marks a pivotal shift for Maersk as it streamlines its operations in line with broader strategic initiatives within the LNG market.
