On October 1, 2018, the Panama Canal Authority proudly announced a groundbreaking achievement in maritime transit, successfully handling four liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessels in one day through its Neopanamax Locks. This new record surpasses the previous benchmark set on April 17, 2018, when three LNG carriers navigated the canal in a single day. Among the vessels that contributed to this historic milestone were the northbound Ribera del Duero Knutsen, boasting a cargo capacity of 173,000 m³, and the Maran Gas Pericles, with a slightly larger capacity of 174,000 m³. In addition, the southbound transits included the Torben Spirit, also with a capacity of 174,000 m³, and the Oceanic Breeze, which can carry 155,300 m³ of LNG. This record-setting day highlights the vital role the Panama Canal plays in connecting global energy customers across South Korea, Japan, Chile, and the US Gulf Coast.
