Seapearl Bulk Carrier Rallies to Rescue Stranded Sailor Off Western Australia
On September 3, 2022, the bulk carrier 'Seapearl' was diverted by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) while navigating from Bunbury to Singapore, leading to a life-saving mission off the coast of Western Australia. An Austrian sailor, who had been single-handedly sailing an 11-metre catamaran from Indonesia to Fremantle, found himself in distress after his vessel capsized approximately 110 kilometres west of Kalbarri. The sailor activated multiple distress signals, prompting AMSA to initiate a Search and Rescue (SAR) operation. The response team coordinated efforts, sending the Perth-based rescue helicopter, Challenger, and dispatched the 'Seapearl' to comb the area for the stranded mariner. Despite challenging weather conditions, the sailor was located and successfully rescued from the tender of his overturned catamaran.
