Seaspan Ferries Expands Fleet with First Eco-Friendly Ferries in North America

Apr 12, 2017 08:42

Seaspan Ferries Corporation (SFC), a key player in Canadian transportation, has proudly introduced two innovative dual-fuel hybrid ferries during a ceremonial event held at their Tilbury Terminal on April 9. The newly commissioned vessels, named Seaspan Swift and Seaspan Reliant, represent a significant advancement in eco-friendly maritime technology as they are the first of their kind in North America, utilizing diesel, liquefied natural gas, and battery power. "The Seaspan Swift and Seaspan Reliant are the pioneers of the next generation of vessels powered by British Columbia’s clean-burning LNG,” commented Christy Clark, Premier of British Columbia. Constructed at Sedef Shipyard in Istanbul, Turkey, the Seaspan Swift reached British Columbia in December 2016 and commenced operations in January 2017. The Seaspan Reliant followed suit, arriving in late February and anticipated to start its service later this month. Both ferries, measuring 148.9 meters in length and capable of accommodating up to 59 trailers of 53 feet, add a modern touch to SFC’s fleet, marking the first major vessel addition since 2002.

Seaspan Ferries Corporation (SFC), based in Delta, British Columbia, has engaged SEDEF Shipyard from Istanbul, Turkey, since November 2014 for the construction of two state-of-the-art dual-fueled ferries operating on both diesel and liquefied natural gas (LNG). The inaugural vessel, SEASPAN SWIFT, measuring 148.9 meters, was successfully delivered in October 2016, making history as North America's first ferry of its kind. This remarkable vessel, designed by Vard Marine, was meticulously constructed at SEDEF's Istanbul/Tuzla yard. As Seaspan Ferries provides essential cargo-only services between Vancouver Island and the Canadian mainland, excitement is now building for the upcoming delivery of the second ferry, SEASPAN RELIANT.
