New Shelter Ships Arrive in IJmuiden to Aid Asylum Seekers
On October 7, 2023, the 'Seaway Falcon' made its way into the port of IJmuiden, delivering two accommodation ships recently retrieved from Singapore. The vessels, 'Bibby Progress' and 'Bibby Renaissance', are now en route to Coenhaven in Amsterdam for further modifications to prepare them as temporary shelters for approximately 1,000 asylum seekers. The 'Bibby Renaissance' can house up to 664 individuals, while the 'Bibby Progress' accommodates 314. Typically utilized for personnel in large maritime projects, these ships are being repurposed to support the refugee reception initiative. Initially, the plan was to begin housing refugees in November; however, this timeline has been pushed back. The Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers has confirmed that due to adverse weather conditions that delayed the arrival of the 'Seaway Falcon', the anticipated start date has now shifted to late December.
