Arrival of Massive Steel Foundations Marks Milestone for Moray East Offshore Wind Farm
The Moray East offshore wind project in Scotland has reached a significant milestone with the arrival of the first batch of 103 massive steel tripods at the Port of Nigg. Transported to shore aboard the 'Osprey', these giant foundations will undergo final preparations before their installation at the project site in the North Sea. Designed to support 9.5MW MHI Vestas V164 turbines, with three tripods designated for substations, these innovative three-legged jackets are integral to the development led by a partnership of Diamond Green, EDPR, Engie, and China Three Gorges. DEME Offshore is taking the lead as the primary contractor. These jackets, fabricated at Lamprell’s facilities in Hamriyah, UAE, embarked on a remarkable 12,000-nautical mile voyage via the Cape of Good Hope to reach the Cromarty Firth, a journey that spans 39 days. Investment in the Port of Nigg has exceeded £50 million, transforming it from a former offshore oil & gas construction yard into a strategic staging port for the UK's burgeoning offshore wind sector, aiming for a capacity of 40GW by 2030. Moray East is projected to be operational by 2022, with electricity costs anticipated at £57.50/MWhr—significantly lower than current offshore wind projects in the UK. This installation is expected to provide sufficient energy for nearly 1 million homes while reducing carbon emissions by 1.4 million tonnes annually. However, the timeline for installation has been challenged following an incident with DEME's vessel 'Orion 1', which experienced a crane collapse during outfitting in Rostock.
OSPREY Sets Sail with Jack-Up Rig KUKULKAN Bound for Mexico
On April 25, 2023, OHT’s semi-submersible heavy lift vessel, OSPREY, successfully loaded the newly constructed Jack-Up Rig KUKULKAN in Singapore, preparing for its journey to Mexico. The OSPREY submerged to the necessary draft to facilitate the operation, while four Keppel-Smit harbour tugs expertly positioned the rig alongside the vessel. This significant move marks a key milestone in the delivery of the KUKULKAN as it embarks on its maritime mission.
