Heroic Rescue: Semirio Saves Crew of Burning Taiwanese Trawler

Apr 21, 2012 21:15

On April 21, 2012, the bulk carrier Semirio executed a dramatic rescue operation 700 miles off the west coast of Guam, saving the crew of the blazing Taiwanese trawler Hsin Man Chun. The incident unfolded at approximately 4:30 p.m. local time when the Coast Guard Guam received an urgent distress signal from an Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) activated by the 70-foot fishing vessel. Responding swiftly, the Coast Guard enlisted the help of VP-1’s P-3 aircraft, which located ten crew members in peril. The P-3 identified eight crew members in a life raft, while two remained trapped on the burning vessel's bridge. To aid in the rescue, the aircraft dropped two life rafts into the water. Fortunately, the Semirio was only 40 miles from the scene, allowing for a prompt response. Upon arrival, the 980-foot bulk carrier launched its small boat, successfully retrieving all ten crew members from their harrowing situation. This operation highlights the importance of swift action in maritime emergencies. For detailed visuals of the rescue, visit http://www.d14.uscgnews.com/go/doc/800/1373547/
