Understanding the Global Fleet of Fishing Vessels
Fishing vessels play an essential role in the global seafood industry, operating in various environments such as oceans, lakes, and rivers to harvest fish. These boats and ships come in numerous designs and sizes, catering to different types of fishing activities, including commercial, artisanal, and recreational fishing. According to estimates, the worldwide fishing vessel fleet stood at approximately 4.6 million in 2016, a figure consistent with previous records from 2014. The Asian region dominates this fleet, boasting around 3.5 million vessels, which represent a staggering 75 percent of the global total. Meanwhile, both Africa and North America saw slight declines in their fishing vessel counts; Africa's fleet dropped by over 30,000, and North America experienced a decrease of nearly 5,000 vessels. In contrast, Asia, along with Latin America, the Caribbean, and Oceania, witnessed growth in vessel numbers, attributed mainly to enhanced estimation methods and data collection practices.
