Oman's Shabab Oman II Embarks on Global Voyage, Docking in Kuwait
The Shabab Oman II, known as Oman Youth II, has made a notable arrival at Shuwaikh Port on Friday as part of its world tour. This journey, themed 'Cooperation Sail 2015,' marks the second initiative by the Royal Navy of Oman to engage in international naval training missions. The inaugural voyage of the original vessel, named Shabab, began in 1979, aimed at fostering global peace, friendship, and camaraderie among nations, as highlighted by the Omani Ambassador to Kuwait, Hamid bin Said bin Salim Al Ibrahim. Constructed in the Netherlands, Shabab Oman II continues this legacy with its mission to promote maritime cooperation. Kuwait serves as the initial stop in the ship's Gulf exploration, with plans to visit all member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). The ship is scheduled to arrive in Muscat on November 10, according to Ambassador Al Ibrahim. With a dedicated crew of 90 personnel from both the Omani Navy and other GCC navies, the vessel is also committed to raising awareness about the 'Sultan Qaboos Sailing Award' and illustrating Oman's rich maritime heritage.
Royal Navy of Oman Welcomes Damen's RNOV Shabab Oman II as New Sail Training Vessel
On September 12, 2023, the Royal Navy of Oman officially took delivery of their new sail training vessel, RNOV Shabab Oman II, during a significant ceremony held at Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding in Vlissingen, Netherlands. This impressive three-masted steel clipper, measuring 87 meters, is set to serve as an ambassador for Oman, showcasing the nation's rich maritime heritage. The RNOV Shabab Oman II is the third such clipper built by Damen, underscoring the excellence of Damen’s craftsmanship and engineering. The event was graced by notable guests, including representatives from the Royal Navy of the Netherlands and Omani diplomats. Commodore Khalifa, speaking on behalf of the Omani Royal Navy, highlighted the vessel's role, stating, "This new ship will navigate the seas with a message of peace and friendship. We express our gratitude to Damen for constructing this magnificent vessel for us." During the ceremony, the Dutch flag was ceremonially lowered from the stern, replaced by the Omani naval ensign, accompanied by the local orchestra performing the Omani national anthem. Damen CEO René Berkvens remarked, "This marks a proud moment for Damen Shipyards. I wish the crew and captains of Shabab Oman II fair winds, following seas, and safe returns to port." He characterized the clipper as "an exceptionally powerful performer – a true diamond of the sea." This delivery comes on the heels of successful sea trials conducted in late July, which took place in the North Sea waters near Vlissingen. Damen Project Manager Arnoud Both explained the purpose of these trials, stating, "We tested various aspects that could not be assessed while docked in a harbor," further emphasizing the vessel’s impressive 2,700 m² sail area.
