Double Prosperity Set to Dock at Malalag Port Following Reef Incident

Jun 17, 2011 10:57

The cargo vessel "Double Prosperity," which was retrieved from Bacud Reef after 39 days, is scheduled to dock at Malalag Port in Davao del Sur instead of Bunawan Wharf in Davao City. This adjustment comes at the request of the Sarangani Provincial Government, as Malalag is geographically closer to Sarangani. While the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) initially recommended that the vessel dock at a Davao port for security reasons, the decision has now shifted to Malalag. The ship was successfully removed from the reef around 4:49 a.m. on June 15. Legal representatives for the Sarangani Provincial Government have requested that authorities hold the "Double Prosperity" until its owners, Yano Kaiun Co. Ltd., address their financial responsibilities for the damages incurred to the reef. The company has pledged to compensate the Provincial Government with an amount reaching US $800,000. However, before the exact financial repercussions can be determined, marine experts must first assess the damage to the reef. The recent investigation led by the Special Board of Marine Inquiry (SBMI) into this incident has been temporarily halted pending the evaluation of the damage and its associated costs. Notably, the captain of the vessel has already acknowledged to the inquiry panel that the incident was a result of human error, stemming from the crew's efforts to locate a cellular phone signal, which necessitated an alteration in the ship's course that ultimately resulted in the tanker colliding with the reef.

Overseas Cargo Ship Refloated After Month on Bacud Reef

Jun 16, 2011 07:45

The M/V Double Prosperity, an overseas cargo ship that ran aground and caused significant damage to Bacud Reef in Kiamba, Sarangani, has been successfully refloated early today, marking the end of over a month of grounding. According to a statement from the Sarangani Information Office, the Philippine Coast Guard confirmed that the vessel is currently being towed towards Davao City for urgent repairs. Timely lifting operations were conducted by the Malayan Towage Company, which utilized tugboats to assist in the refloating process. Commander Roy Echeverria, the deputy commander of the General Santos City Coast Guard station, stated that the ship has received the necessary certification to navigate from Kiamba to its temporary docking location in Davao City. The cargo ship will remain there pending the completion of investigations by the Special Board of Marine Inquiry (SBMI).
