Bulk Carrier Incident at Ponta da Madeira Involves 'Shandong Da Zhi' and 'Pacific Opal'
On the night of June 11, 2019, an incident at Ponta da Madeira resulted in a collision between two vessels, the bulk carrier 'Shandong Da Zhi' and the 'Pacific Opal'. At approximately 10:40 PM, the mooring lines of the 'Shandong Da Zhi' failed while it was positioned at Pier IV North of Ponta da Madeira Terminal, following its loading operation. Simultaneously, the 'Pacific Opal' was maneuvering towards Pier IV South at the same terminal. As the currents shifted, the 'Shandong Da Zhi' drifted unexpectedly backwards and collided with the incoming 'Pacific Opal'. To prevent further movements, tugs were called in to assist the bulk carrier. A pilot was then boarded to facilitate the unberthing process of the 'Shandong Da Zhi'. The following morning, the 'Pacific Opal' departed the Ponta da Madeira Terminal and anchored at Ponta da Madeira Inner Anchorage in the Sao Luiz Anchorage Area, where it was set to undergo a damage assessment. In parallel, the 'Shandong Da Zhi' was also anchored in the Sao Luiz Anchorage Area, awaiting inspections. An investigation into the cause of the incident is ongoing.
