Release of the 'Sheksna' After Detention in Sligo
The 'Sheksna', a vessel recently held in Sligo, has been released following its detention on October 16. The ship was apprehended just two days after arriving from the port of Sfax, due to an inspection conducted by the Irish Marine Survey Office (MSO) under the guidelines of the Paris Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). After being docked at Deepwater Quay for nearly two weeks, the 'Sheksna' was storing over 2,000 tonnes of olive stone granulate, which was unloaded prior to its impoundment. The vessel departed Sligo on November 6, navigating away during the afternoon high tide. Despite the unfortunate circumstances, the ship's 11 crew members remained on board and have been receiving ample provisions throughout their time in port, with recent supplies replenished.
Ship Grounding in the Elbe River Near Hamburg
On the morning of September 21, 2017, at 6:47 a.m., the cargo vessel 'Sheksna' encountered trouble when it ran aground in the Elbe River near Hamburg-Cranz, specifically at the Mühlenberg Hole. The vessel, which had just loaded a hefty 135-ton generator at J.J. Sietas Yard in Neuenfelde, was en route to Riga when it became stranded, likely due to a late departure from the Este River that left it vulnerable to the outgoing tide. As high tide approached at 6:20 p.m., rescue operations commenced with tugs arriving on the scene to assist in refloating the 'Sheksna.' The tugboat 'Löwe' (IMO: 211590310) was crucial in the efforts to free the vessel, which had become lodged within the fairway between buoys EZ 7 and EZ 9. Once successfully pulled free, the 'Sheksna' was directed to Mönckeberg Quay at Ellerholz Port in Hamburg, where it was docked at warehouses 76/77 for inspections prior to heading to Jöhnk Yard in Harburg for necessary repairs. After undergoing work, the ship departed the yard on October 10 at 9:45 p.m. and anchored at the northern Elbe pilings. Notably, the 'Sheksna' has also been involved in the contentious transportation of nuclear materials to Hamburg, drawing protests and objections from environmental advocates.
