On September 9, 2019, at 2 a.m., the 'Shoyo Maru', carrying 62 students and teachers, faced a harrowing incident off the coast of Yokosuka when it was struck by the freighter 'Oyariki Maru No. 36'. The allision occurred as the freight vessel, a sand carrier, lost its anchor grip and drifted towards the stationary training and research ship amidst the powerful winds and rains of Typhoon Faxai. This unfortunate event took place just after the 'Shoyo Maru', which had been commissioned in April of the same year, embarked on its maiden voyage to Hawaii. However, the treacherous conditions forced the vessel to seek shelter during the typhoon's passage, ultimately leading to the interruption of its journey due to significant damage to its hull and equipment.
