Bulk Carrier Harriett Successfully Refloated After Extended Grounding
The bulk carrier Harriett has been successfully refloated as of the morning of March 31, following more than two weeks aground. After employing its own means to regain buoyancy, the vessel has anchored near the grounding location for thorough surveys. Preliminary underwater inspections revealed no hull damage, as the Harriett had grounded on a sandy seabed near Mudyug Island on March 14, shortly after departing from Arkhangelsk port, where it was carrying a cargo of 20,000 tons of coal destined for Terneuzen.
Bulk Carrier 'Harriet' Grounds in White Sea During Ice Navigation
On March 15, 2018, the bulk carrier 'Harriet' found itself hard aground on the western shore of Mudyug Island in the White Sea. This incident occurred shortly after the vessel departed from Arkhangelsk, where it was loaded with 20,000 tons of coal, en route to Terneuzen. The 'Harriet' was navigating through icy conditions, trailing an icebreaker that unfortunately experienced an engine failure, leading to the bulk carrier being pushed off the fairway by shifting ice floes. By March 19, efforts to dislodge the vessel had yet to succeed, and it remained firmly aground. An underwater inspection was scheduled for March 20 to assess the situation further. Two salvage approaches were being considered: either lightening the load on the ship or utilizing icebreakers for a refloat attempt. However, despite several salvage attempts, the 'Harriet' continued to remain stranded as of March 29.
