The Silja-Symphony: Crew Feedback and Vessel Data

On the evening of March 23, 2023, a 61-year-old crew member aboard the ferry 'Silja Symphony' experienced a seizure while en route from Helsinki to Stockholm. Prompt action was taken by fellow crew members who commenced first aid around 11 p.m. and quickly alerted maritime rescue services for a helicopter medevac. In a bid to expedite the rescue, the vessel altered its course toward the coast near Hangö. Unfortunately, thick fog blanketed the area, rendering helicopter evacuation impossible. The Finnish Coast Guard dispatched a rescue ship to assist, and the ship's medical team, along with passengers who had medical expertise, worked tirelessly to save the man’s life. Tragically, despite these efforts, he passed away on board. As a result of this unfortunate incident, the 'Silja Symphony' arrived in Stockholm approximately one hour behind schedule on the morning of March 24.

The 'Sija Symphony,' a prominent ferry operating in the Baltic Sea, has successfully undergone repairs to its stabilizer at the ferry terminal in Stockholm. Work was initiated on October 27th and concluded late on October 28th, with the stabilizer being reinstalled in the vessel's hull. Following a review and approval by Swedish authorities, the ferry is set to depart for Helsinki on the afternoon of October 29th. The technical issues had disrupted travel plans for thousands of passengers, but with the repairs now rectified, smooth operations are anticipated to resume.

On October 27, 2019, the much-anticipated departure of the 'Silja Symphony' from Stockholm was abruptly canceled due to a malfunction involving the vessel's bow thruster system. The issue was identified early in the morning as the ferry docked at the terminal, signaling a day of unexpected challenges ahead. Scheduled for a 4:45 p.m. departure to Helsinki, the ship's crew, alongside technical experts and divers, spent the day attempting repairs to rectify the stabilizer problem, but their efforts yielded unsatisfactory results. As the situation unfolded, the delay grew into several hours, and ultimately, the ferry company confirmed that the vessel would remain in port, unable to sail. Approximately 2,100 passengers were onboard and permitted to remain within the confines of the ship during this ordeal, with access to onboard amenities such as restaurants, cafes, and select retail outlets. Consequently, the planned departure from Helsinki on October 28 was also scrapped. In the aftermath of this disruption, Tallink Silja's customer service team is reaching out to all affected travelers to provide further assistance.
