Tanker 'Linda Kosan' Loses Rudder and Requires Tug Assistance
On February 24, a trio of tugs—'Alb Forward' (IMO: 9367516), 'Multratug 29' (IMO: 9795816), and 'Shengli 242' (IMO: 1058432)—came to the aid of the disabled tanker 'Linda Kosan' as it drifted in the English Channel, en route to Terneuzen with an expected arrival time of February 25 at 8 a.m. The vessel experienced a rudder failure amidst turbulent conditions in the Bay of Biscay, according to statements from Lauritzen Kosan A/S. Despite the significant challenge, the ship’s propeller continued to function, and thanks to the effective use of bow thrusters, the crew was able to maintain some level of stability until the tugs arrived. After the captain reported a loss of control, investigations revealed that the helm was missing, with the precise cause remaining unknown until the tanker is unloaded and undergoes drydock inspections. On February 27, tugs 'Multratug 17' and 'Multratug 19' took over the towing operations to assist 'Linda Kosan' as it approached the final leg of its journey to Terneuzen. By 3:20 p.m. that day, the tanker had safely docked at Braakman Dock. Following the unloading of its cargo, 'Linda Kosan' was towed to the Shipyard Reimerswaal in Flushing-East, where it was docked at 5:40 a.m. on March 2 for necessary repairs. Upon completion of its repairs, the vessel successfully conducted sea trials by April 30 and set sail for Bilbao, with an estimated time of arrival slated for May 2.
Rudder Incident Near Land's End: 'Linda Kosan' Impaired at Sea
On February 20, 2020, the 'Linda Kosan' encountered severe steering complications attributed to a malfunction or loss of its rudder. The vessel, which was navigating from Bilbao to Terneuzen with 13 crew members on board, found itself in distress approximately 250 miles southwest of Land's End, at coordinates 46°54'N, 008°00'W. Nearby, the Dutch offshore tug 'ALP Forward' (IMO: 9367516) was mobilized to assist but was hampered by adverse weather conditions that prevented it from securing a towing line. The rescue efforts resumed on the morning of February 21, and by February 22, the convoy had successfully resumed its journey towards Terneuzen, with an estimated arrival date set for February 25.
