Pirates Strike: Tanker Hijacked Off Pulau Bintan in Fuel Theft Incident
In a brazen attack on March 9, 2015, the tanker 'Singa Berlian' was overtaken by a group of seven armed pirates near Pulau Bintan. The assailants, wielding guns and machetes, meticulously transferred approximately 1,500 tons of fuel to a different vessel before making off with the crew's personal belongings. Fortunately, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) was able to locate and recover the hijacked tanker near Batu Pahat in southern Malaysia. At the time of the incident, the 'Singa Berlian' was making its way from Penang to Labuan. The pirates not only looted the ship but also vandalized its communication and navigation systems, leaving the crew in a precarious situation. A crew member sustained a minor injury during this tumultuous encounter.
