No Legal Action Following Tragic Death of Filipino Seaman on Moonray
In a disappointing turn of events, no charges will be issued regarding safety violations linked to the tragic death of Filipino seaman Gerome Reyes aboard the cargo ship "Moonray" on May 22, 2016. The coroner has classified the incident as an accident. Reyes, a 26-year-old from Batangas, Philippines, met a fatal end between a goods lift and the deck of the vessel after it had departed from Southampton en route to Lithuania. Following the tragedy, a police investigation was conducted; however, no legal actions were taken against the owners of the ship. During the inquest, Dr. Anton van Dellen, representing the Philippine Embassy, argued for a classification of unlawful killing due to gross negligence. Nonetheless, Coroner Grahame Short concluded that the evidence did not support this claim, emphasizing, "This was an accidental death, albeit a tragic accident. Mr. Reyes likely either forgot or inadvertently activated the green start button while attempting to reach for items in the lift, leading to the accident."
