Sjernarøy Ferry's Repairs Near Completion Amid Propulsion System Delays

Oct 24, 2014 09:17

The repairs for the ferry 'Sjernarøy' are nearing completion, but Norled is still awaiting essential parts for the vessel's propulsion system. It is anticipated that the ferry will take approximately four weeks before it resumes service. The 'Sjernarøy' ran aground at North Hidle in Sjernarøy on October 12, but fortunately, all 43 passengers emerged without serious injuries. While the ferry did sustain some water damage, it has since docked at GMC Yard in Buøy, Stavanger. Fortunately, the damage to the hull was less severe than initially feared. Repairs are set to finish early next week; however, operators are still waiting for the delivery of new propellers from Finland, with no confirmed delivery date yet. The parts are expected to arrive no earlier than the second week of November. Once received, they will need to be mounted and calibrated. In the meantime, Norled has been relying on the chartered ferry 'Rygerfjell,' which has limited capacity, accommodating only about half the number of vehicles that 'Sjernarøy' can carry. A three-day wait was necessary before the reserve ferry was put into service following the tender. Repair Journey Begins for Grounded Ferry 'Sjernarøy'

Oct 13, 2014 10:34

Following an unfortunate grounding incident on October 12 at 8:15 PM, the ferry 'Sjernarøy' has been towed to Stavanger for extensive repairs. The vessel ran aground on the northern side of North-Hilde, leading to significant damage. Only the 'Foldøy' remained operational, providing services between Fogn and Judaberg during this period of disruption. After being successfully refloated, 'Sjernarøy' made a brief stop at Judaberg to discharge its vehicle cargo before being towed onward by the tug 'Mega Mammut', with assistance from the lifeboat 'Peter Henry von Koss'. The ferry safely arrived in Stavanger the following morning, October 13 at 9 AM. Preliminary investigations suggest that a technical malfunction may have hindered the ship's ability to decelerate, resulting in the grounding incident. Ferry Incident in Ryfylke: Evacuation After Grounding of Sjernarøy

Oct 12, 2014 23:10

A maritime mishap occurred on October 12, 2014, when the 'Sjernarøy' ferry ran aground near North Hidle in the Ryfylke region at approximately 8:15 p.m. The vessel, which had departed from Nedstrand at 7:35 p.m., encountered difficulties that prompted an immediate response from local emergency services. Rescue teams, including ambulance crews, police, and a rescue helicopter, were deployed swiftly after the grounding was reported to the authorities at 8:35 p.m. By 8:50 p.m., both an ambulance boat and a rescue boat had reached the scene. A total of 45 individuals, including 43 passengers, were safely evacuated by 9 p.m. The swift action of the fast ferry 'Fjordkatt' ensured that those affected were transported to their intended destinations along the ferry route. One crew member sustained lacerations on his forehead and received medical attention from ambulance staff. The local police have initiated an investigation into the incident, which is suspected to be linked to a technical malfunction. Notably, five crew members, along with the captain, remained aboard the Sjernarøy as it took on some water.
