Stricken Freighter Towed to Dunkirk After Turbo Charger Failure

Mar 17, 2019 19:34

On March 16, the freighter "Tiona," which was sailing in ballast and en route from Rotterdam to Bilbao with a crew of 14, encountered a critical failure of its turbo charger. The incident occurred approximately 19 miles off the British coast at coordinates 51 17 24 N, 001 49 27 E, as it awaited anchorage near the mid falls buoy. After unsuccessful attempts to restart the engine, the vessel began to drag its anchor, drifting perilously close to the coast in treacherous weather conditions, just 15 miles from The Downs. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, CROSS Gris Nez coordinated assistance from the French tug "Abeille Languedoc," which promptly agreed to tow the distressed ship. The tug arrived on the scene at 10:30 a.m. and engaged in a towing operation, transporting the "Tiona" a total of 36 miles to Dunkirk. Following the establishment of a commercial towing contract, the tow commenced successfully, with the freighter reaching Dunkirk port by 7 a.m. on March 17. After the resolution of her mechanical issues, the "Tiona" left Dunkirk on April 3, at 4:30 p.m. Subsequently, she anchored at Calais at 6 p.m., positioned at 51° 4.68' N 001° 50.17' E, pending further instructions.
