On July 17, 2013, a remarkable rescue operation unfolded when the US-flagged sailing vessel 'Melita', en route to Iceland, required urgent assistance after becoming disabled in turbulent waters near Newfoundland. The maritime distress signal was raised at 6:53 p.m. Newfoundland time on July 16, prompting the Marine Communications and Traffic Services in St. John’s to alert the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) in Halifax. At that time, 'Melita' was located approximately 435 nautical miles northeast of Gander and 400 nautical miles south of Greenland. In response, JRCC Halifax promptly dispatched the Coast Guard vessel 'Cygnus', embarking on a laborious 350-nautical-mile voyage to assist the stricken vessel. Furthermore, within an hour, a Hercules aircraft from CFB Trenton was also mobilized to provide aerial support. As the situation developed, the 'Megan C', a nearby vessel identified by JRCC Halifax, was called upon for aid at 8:19 p.m. Notably, 'Megan C' was just 90 nautical miles away from 'Melita'. By 3 a.m., the Hercules aircraft reached the vicinity but was unable to execute the rescue due to inclement sea conditions. However, the 'Megan C' arrived on the scene at 7 a.m. on July 17 and immediately initiated the rescue operation, successfully bringing aboard two of the three passengers within moments. The final passenger was rescued shortly thereafter, within 30 minutes of the 'Megan C's' arrival. Having completed the lifesaving mission, 'Megan C' continued its journey towards Montreal, where it was anticipated to arrive on July 22.
