SMS Panamera Faces Third Detention in Two Months Amid Safety Concerns

Feb 02, 2026 09:49

The vessel SMS Panamera has recently been detained in Yalova on January 23 due to a total of 12 identified deficiencies, two of which were classified as serious, warranting immediate action. These critical issues included a malfunction in the Pollution Prevention Ballast Water Management System and non-compliant fire safety measures regarding fire doors and openings in fire-resisting divisions. After being detained, the SMS Panamera was released on January 30 and subsequently moved to the Istanbul Anchorage. This latest incident marks the ship's third detention in just over two months. Previously, the vessel was held in Novorossiysk on January 8, where it accumulated 17 deficiencies and remained in detention for one week. Another detention occurred on November 15, 2025, again in Novorossiysk, where it was cited for seven deficiencies and held for eight days. The continuous safety and compliance issues surrounding the SMS Panamera raise concerns about the vessel's operational integrity and adherence to maritime regulations.

Detained Vessel 'SMS Panamera' Faces Multiple Deficiencies in Novorossiysk

Nov 27, 2025 10:00

On November 15, the cargo ship 'SMS Panamera', formerly known as 'Prince Mouhammad', was detained in Novorossiysk after authorities uncovered seven critical deficiencies. The inspection revealed alarming issues, including unsafe labor conditions in dangerous areas and inadequate access features on the ship. Furthermore, lifesaving appliances, including lifebuoys, were found to be improperly provisioned and disposed of, compromising crew safety. Navigational safety was also called into question due to insufficient monitoring of the voyage plan, while the management of ballast water did not meet pollution prevention standards. Additionally, fire safety concerns arose from inoperative fire dampers. After a period of rectification, the vessel was released on November 23 and subsequently set sail for Damietta. Notably, this was not the ship's first encounter with regulatory issues; it faced a previous detention on January 8, 2025, in Novorossiysk, which resulted in 16 deficiencies over a five-day period, still under its former name, 'Prince Mouhammad.'

Prince Mouhammad Detained in Novorossiysk for Multiple Deficiencies

Jan 16, 2025 09:58

On January 8, 2025, the cargo vessel 'Prince Mouhammad' faced detention in Novorossiysk, citing a staggering 16 deficiencies. Among the critical issues identified were deficiencies in mandatory certificates and documentation, including the International Ballast Water Management Certificate, which did not meet regulatory requirements. Other noted deficiencies included the Continuous Synopsis Record and the Cargo Ship Safety Equipment, which also failed to comply with established standards. In addition to documentation issues, the ship's radio communication facilities were inadequate for receiving essential marine safety information. Navigation systems faced several shortcomings: the echo sounder was inoperative, navigation lights and signals did not conform to regulations, and the compass correction log was also out of order. The machinery controls alarms were inoperative, revealing significant operational risks onboard. Labour conditions were not up to standard, with failures in winches and capstans, sleeping quarters, and access features. Emergency systems were flagged, particularly the public address system and the water level indicator, which was non-functional. The vessel's structural integrity raised concerns, as the ballast, fuel, and other tanks did not meet required standards. Furthermore, the propulsion main engine and the International Safety Management (ISM) certificate were found lacking as well. After addressing these issues, the 'Prince Mouhammad' was released on January 13, 2025, and set sail toward Jebel Ali with an Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) of January 18, 2025. This detention follows a previous incident on August 28, 2024, in Monfalcone, where the vessel was held for seven days due to 19 deficiencies. Crew of Abandoned 'St Elias' Faces Dire Situation Off Crete Coast

Oct 15, 2018 13:10

The crew members aboard the 'St Elias', currently anchored near the small port of Kaloi Limenes on the southern coast of Crete, are in a precarious situation as they grapple with dwindling supplies. After four weeks of being stranded, the 20 Ukrainian sailors on the vessel report alarming shortages of food and water. Abandoned by both their owners and managers, the crew has not received payment for three months, further exacerbating their plight. With their financial resources exhausted, the provisions on the ship have begun to spoil. What's more concerning is that the ship is running low on both fuel and fresh water. The remaining fuel for the generator is estimated to last only another two days, putting the ship's stability at risk if the electricity goes out. Reports and images highlight the deteriorating condition of the interior, underscoring the urgent need for major repairs. St. Elias Faces Another Inspection After Technical Setbacks

Aug 14, 2018 12:47

The ship 'St. Elias', currently prohibited from sailing, remains anchored off La Pallice at coordinates 46Β° 4.60' N and 001Β° 14.21' W since July 26, 2018. Authorities ordered the vessel to dock due to technical failures that surfaced during a routine inspection. A follow-up inspection is scheduled for August 14, as the Greek shipowner collaborates to bring the vessel back into operation. Representatives from a Polish classification society are onboard to issue the necessary certification upon completion of the required repairs. In early July, inspectors in Lorient discovered 30 deficiencies, primarily related to the engine, generators, navigation equipment, and mooring systems, with repair costs estimated in the tens of thousands of Euros. The Romanian crew has since returned home, receiving their outstanding wages totaling 65,000 Euros, while Ukrainian replacements have taken their place on the ship. The International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) is seeking to board the 'St. Elias' to discuss the crew's living conditions, and has requested the vessel to dock at La Rochelle for this purpose. Currently, it is reported that the crew has access to sufficient food and water supplies. Initially, the 'St. Elias' was set to load a grain cargo in La Rochelle, but that charter was terminated due to significant delays.
