Oman Drydock Welcomes Record-Breaking Vessel 'Sohar Max'

May 29, 2017 10:28

Oman Drydock Company (ODC), located in Duqm of the Al Wusta Governorate, marked a significant milestone on May 23 with the arrival of the 'Sohar Max'. This impressive vessel is the largest ever to dock at ODC since it began operations in 2011. Owned by Oman Shipping Company, 'Sohar Max' boasts a remarkable length of 360 meters and a width of 65 meters, with a substantial carrying capacity of 400,000 tonnes. This behemoth, essential for transporting iron ore, is scheduled for an extensive maintenance period lasting 11 days.

Historic Arrival: First Fully Laden Valemax Bulk Carrier Docks in China After Four Years

Jul 27, 2015 19:25

In a landmark moment for maritime logistics, the first Valemax bulk carrier has completed a fully laden journey to China, four years after the debut of these colossal vessels. The Sohar Max, boasting a deadweight tonnage of 400,000 dwt, arrived at Dongjiakou port over the weekend, carrying a substantial load of iron ore sourced from Brazil's Ponta Da Madeira port. This milestone comes on the heels of China lifting its ban on Valemax ships, allowing for direct transport to Chinese shores without the need for transshipment at intermediate ports like the Philippines or Malaysia, where previous Valemaxes had faced operational hurdles. The recent agreement between Vale and Chinese authorities has paved the way for the Brazilian mining giant to provide Chinese shipping companies with a fleet of Very Large Ore Carriers (VLOCs) for more efficient ore transportation. Valemaxes have garnered significant attention within the shipping industry due to their massive size and earlier limitations on deployment, prompting comparisons to the underutilized Ultra Large Crude Carriers (ULCCs) from the late 1970s. Notably, the Seawise Giant, delivered in 1979 and recognized as the largest ship ever constructed, never completed a full-load journey throughout its career.

Oman Shipping Receives Massive 380,000 dwt VLOC Vale Sohar from China Rongsheng

Sep 28, 2012 23:50

China Rongsheng Heavy Industries proudly announced the delivery of its latest Very Large Ore Carrier (VLOC) named Vale Sohar, which boasts a remarkable deadweight tonnage of 380,000 dwt. This significant event took place on Friday, September 28, 2012, marking a fruitful collaboration with Oman Shipping. The introduction of Vale Sohar has been met with enthusiasm from Oman Shipping, reflecting the quality craftsmanship of China Rongsheng. After launching only one VLOC in the previous year, the shipyard has impressively expanded its output to five VLOCs in 2012 by the end of September.
