Working Conditions Aboard the Sorrento-Jet

In the early hours of July 20, 2016, the popular tourist ferry 'Sorrento Jet' suffered a catastrophic fire while docked at San Lorenzo in Vieste. The blaze, set by unidentified arsonists using a flammable liquid and a triggering device, quickly engulfed the vessel, which was known for transporting holidaymakers to the picturesque Tremiti Islands. The fire originated in the wheelhouse and, aided by winds, rapidly spread throughout the ship, ultimately leading to its total destruction. Local firefighters from the Gargano Vico fire department, alongside the patrol boat 'CP 880', responded promptly to the emergency, bravely working to extinguish the flames and secure the surrounding area. Volunteers from the civil protection group 'Pegaso' from Vieste were also present to assist in the operations. This incident marks a troubling continuation of attacks against the ferry, as there had been a failed arson attempt on the vessel the previous year. Adding to the distressing scene, just days prior, three inflatable boats belonging to the Gargano tour operator, which were utilized for excursions in the enchanting bays and coves of the Diomede Archipelago, were found damaged and rendered inoperative.
