Cammell Laird Celebrates Launch of New Ferries in Star-Studded Naming Ceremony
Cammell Laird, the renowned shipyard and engineering company based in Birkenhead, has proudly hosted a grand naming ceremony for its first complete vessels in two decades, created for Scottish ferry operator Western Ferries. This momentous occasion celebrated the successful completion of a substantial contract, which saw the construction of two new car ferries: MV Sound of Seil (Cammell Laird keel number 1387) and MV Sound of Soay (keel number 1388). Continuing the company’s tradition, the ferries are named after Scottish sounds, reflecting the rich maritime heritage of the region. The event drew over 200 guests, including prominent figures from the maritime sector, who gathered to witness the ceremonial blessings of the ferries. The highlight of the ceremony was the christening of the vessels, where Glenis Coles and Maria Chittick, wives of long-serving Western Ferries staff members Capt Robin Coles and Neil Chittick, joyfully smashed champagne bottles against the bows. Equipped to carry 54 cars each, these new ferries represent an upgrade from Western Ferries' MV Sound of Shuna, which accommodates 45 cars. As both the MV Sound of Seil and MV Sound of Soay approach the final stages of their finishing touches and sea trials, they are set to commence operations shortly on the busy route between Dunoon and Gourock, enhancing the ferry service for the local communities.
