Ceremony Celebrates Launch of New LNG Carriers from Angola
On August 17, 2023, a momentous naming ceremony took place at Samsung Heavy Industries' shipyard on Geoje Island, South Korea, unveiling two new LNG vessels. These ships are part of a collaborative venture involving NYK LNG (Atlantic) Ltd., a subsidiary of NYK based in London; Mitsui & Co. Ltd. from Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; and Canada's Teekay Corporation. The newly christened vessels are set to transport liquefied natural gas (LNG) produced by Angola LNG Ltd. around the globe, with operations under the charter of Angola LNG Supply Services (ALSS) headquartered in Houston, USA. During the ceremony, Mr. Kobayashi's wife had the honor of naming one vessel 'Soyo,' while Mr. Glendinning's wife named the other 'Malanje.' The two women, alongside Mr. Kato’s wife, participated in a traditional ritual where they cut the ceremonial rope securing the vessels. The ownership of Soyo and Malanje is split among the partners, with NYK LNG (Atlantic) owning 33%, Mitsui holding 34%, and Teekay also at 33%. Expected to be completed by August 30 and September 30, respectively, these vessels are the first two of a total of four sister ships under construction at the same shipyard. All four vessels will facilitate LNG shipments from Angola, secured by 20-year time charters, significantly contributing to the global energy market.
