Polish Vessel 'Lunamar' Avoids Disaster After Captain's Intoxication

May 04, 2014 13:11

On April 24, 2014, the Polish freighter 'Lunamar' experienced a harrowing close call while navigating the waters between Vaasa, Finland, and Umeå, Sweden. The ship was left in a precarious situation when its captain fell asleep at the helm as they approached the harbor in Vaasa. Alarmingly, it was later revealed that the captain was under the influence of alcohol during this critical moment. Swift action was taken as helicopters from both Sweden and Finland were dispatched to monitor the situation, prompting the Marine Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) in Turku to issue alerts. Fortunately, the captain regained consciousness approximately 15 minutes before the vessel risked running aground near Valsörarna. The Polish captain was subsequently interrogated by the Border Guard, leading to a deportation order from the authorities. Following these developments, another crew member assumed control of the ship. Currently, the 'Lunamar' is on its way to Bermeo, Spain, with an estimated arrival date of May 5, ensuring the incident did not escalate into a maritime catastrophe.
