Engine Malfunction Halts 'Spanaco Progress' in Dardanelles Strait
In a notable incident on July 14, 2025, at approximately 11 p.m. UTC, the cargo vessel 'Spanaco Progress' encountered a critical engine failure while navigating the Dardanelles Strait, close to the historic Gallipoli coastline (Lat. 40.4085 Lng. 26.7232). The vessel was making its way from Tarragona to Kocaeli at the time of the malfunction. Promptly, assistance was summoned, including the tugboats 'Kurtarma 3' (IMO: 9335939) and 'Kurtarma 19' (IMO: 9995129), along with a pilot to ensure safe navigation. By 11:40 p.m., the 'Kurtarma 19' had successfully taken the 'Spanaco Progress' in tow, guiding it at a controlled speed of roughly four knots toward the Şevketiye Anchorage Area, under the oversight of the Çanakkale Ship Traffic Services Center. The vessel was securely moored in position 40° 25' N 026° 50' E by around 1 a.m. on July 15, where it remained anchored without movement as of July 16. Disabled Bulk Carrier Spanaco Progress Towed to Brest for Repairs
The bulk carrier 'Spanaco Progress' faced a challenging weekend anchored off Belle-Ile while the crew worked to fix propulsion issues. On March 19, 2019, the tug 'Amber II' took charge of towing the vessel to Brest. By 4:30 p.m., the tugboats 'Clairvoyant' and 'Robuste' facilitated the transfer of the 'Spanaco Progress' to No. 4 repair dock of the CIB Brest Shipyard. The Damen Shipyard's technicians are set to address the ship's main engine, a robust seven-cylinder STX MAN generating an impressive 3,807 horsepower, with spare parts ordered from the manufacturer. At the time of the incident, the freighter was carrying a hefty 6,000 tons of quartz, having departed from Port Said on February 9. After repairs were completed, the 'Spanaco Progress' resumed its journey, leaving Brest on April 4 at 5 p.m., heading toward the English Channel.
