In a heartbreaking maritime incident, an Indian crew member tragically lost his life after falling overboard from the MV Spar Scorpio while navigating from Samsun to Houston. The unfortunate event occurred on February 17, 2026, near Malta in the Mediterranean Sea. Distress signals were transmitted by the vessel between 3:25 p.m. and 3:32 p.m. Norwegian time, triggering a swift response from the Malta Rescue Center. An extensive search operation was launched, involving both a search and rescue (SAR) aircraft and local vessels; however, despite their efforts, no trace of the crew member was found. At the time of the accident, the ship was preparing for sea amid challenging weather conditions, awaiting an improvement in the environment to proceed with bunkering operations in Malta. In response to this tragic event, the Norwegian Accident Investigation Board has initiated a formal inquiry to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident.

On February 13, 2020, the bulk carrier 'Spar Scorpio', which had just delivered a substantial cargo of 49,801 tonnes of coal, was detained at the outer anchorage of Chittagong Port. The detention came as a result of a court order issued by the local High Court amidst an ongoing litigation case. The 'Spar Scorpio' had originally arrived at Chittagong on February 2, providing vital resources to the region. After successfully offloading its cargo by May 7, the vessel received a release order from the local court. With this legal hurdle overcome, the ship prepared for its imminent departure, signaling the resolution of the dispute that had led to its arrest.
