Ferry 'Spiekeroog IV' Runs Aground in Neuharlingersiel, Later Self-Rescues

Jan 05, 2026 12:44

On January 2, 2026, the ferry 'Spiekeroog IV' found itself grounded at the Neuharlingersiel port during high tide. The vessel inadvertently ventured too far onto a concrete ramp, leaving it unable to navigate back to deeper waters. However, in a fortunate turn of events, the ferry successfully freed itself around 9 p.m. without suffering any damage to its hull. This incident marks a troubling reminder, as the 'Spiekeroog IV' had previously experienced grounding troubles during Storm Zoltan just before Christmas in 2023. During that previous incident, the ferry required a crane for salvaging and was stranded for several weeks. Spiekeroog IV Passenger Ship Aground for Seven Hours

Jan 07, 2020 18:42

On January 6, 2020, the passenger vessel 'Spiekeroog IV', carrying 140 individuals, ran aground shortly after departing from the island port, situated between Spiekeroog and Neuharlingersiel. The DGzRS station at Neuharlingersiel dispatched the lifeboat 'Neuharlingersiel' to assist in refloating the vessel, but initial attempts proved unsuccessful. As crew and passengers awaited a solution, they were provided free meals and had the unique opportunity to explore the open bridge of the ship. Finally, thanks to the rising tide, the 'Spiekeroog IV' was able to regain its footing and break free from the shallow waters at approximately 5:45 p.m. The ship successfully reached the port of Neuharlingersiel by 6:40 p.m., concluding an unexpected seven-hour ordeal for the passengers aboard.
