Fire Erupts on Srikandi 511 Tanker During Fuel Loading in South Kalimantan
In a dramatic incident on May 25, 2018, a fire erupted aboard the tanker 'Srikandi 511' while it was moored at dock 3 of the Banjarmasin fuel terminal, located in Banjamarsin, South Kalimantan. At approximately 1:30 a.m., the crew was in the midst of loading 4,000 tons of diesel fuel when flames ignited, rapidly spreading from tank 3 to tank 4. The situation escalated quickly, leading to an immediate alert that brought dozens of firefighters to the scene. Fire crews successfully controlled the blaze within two and a half hours, minimizing further damage. As the fire raged, burning fuel leaked into the River Barito, creating a hazardous situation as it drifted downstream over a wide area. Several Pertamina tankers, including 'Gonaya III', 'Najeha', and 'AJB 03', which were docked nearby at the SADP base, sustained minor damage due to the burning fuel in the water. In a bid to avoid the encroaching flames, the crew of these tankers unleashed their anchor ropes and drifted to safety in the center of the Barito River, while two tugboats—'Mandiri Berau' and 'Rimau 208'—also experienced impacts from the incident. The 'Srikandi 511' suffered significant damage due to the fire, but thankfully, all 18 individuals on board, including 16 crew members, two guards, and a surveyor, were able to escape unharmed. They were subsequently taken to the Polair Banjarmasin Police Headquarters for safety. The incident has prompted investigations, with multiple reports and visual documentation already emerging from local media sources.
