Bulk Carrier Rescues Ill Crew Member from Longliner

Feb 25, 2021 12:59

On February 23, 2021, at 4:45 p.m., the CROSS AG received an urgent call from the longliner 'AR Letoad', reporting that one of its crew members was in distress approximately 75 nautical miles from Réunion. Acting swiftly, CROSS connected the fishing vessel to a physician from the maritime medical consultation center located at the Purpan hospital in Toulouse. Following the assessment, the doctor advised that the sailor required immediate evacuation to a medical facility. Given that the longliner was nearly ten hours' journey from Réunion and outside the operational range of a helicopter, the CROSS sought assistance from the bulk carrier 'SSI Invincible II', which was navigating from Port Louise to Richards Bay. The vessel was requested to change course to evaluate the possibility of transferring the affected sailor aboard. At 9:30 p.m., the transfer was successfully executed, allowing the crew member to receive preliminary medical attention on the bulk carrier. Subsequently, arrangements were made for a helicopter from the gendarmerie, carrying a SAMU physician, to rendezvous with the bulk carrier approximately 20 nautical miles west of Réunion. The patient was hoisted at around 1:00 a.m. and promptly transported to the Saint-Denis hospital center for further medical care.
