Star Bulk Carriers Expands Fleet Through Acquisition of Songa Bulk

In a significant move for the maritime industry, US-listed maritime operator Star Bulk Carriers has finalized the acquisition of Oslo-listed Songa Bulk, enhancing its fleet with 15 state-of-the-art bulk carriers. This impressive fleet consists of 3 Capesize bulkers, 10 Kamsarmax bulkers, 1 Ultramax bulker, and 1 Supramax bulker. To facilitate this acquisition, Star Bulk will issue 13.7 million new shares and invest USD 145 million in cash for the fleet. The cash component of the transaction will be financed by China Merchants Bank Leasing. In addition to this strategic acquisition, Star Bulk has also announced its plans to acquire three Newcastlemax bulkers currently under construction at Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (SWS). These vessels are slated for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2018 and the first quarter of 2019 from OceanBulk Container Carriers. As part of this acquisition, Star Bulk will issue an additional 3.39 million new shares, and CSSC Shipping Company is set to provide USD 104.4 million to finance the purchase of the newbuilds. This expansion underscores Star Bulk's commitment to growing its operational capabilities in the bulk shipping market.
