Bulk Carrier Incident at Stockton Port Disrupts Power Supply
On January 19, 2016, at 8 a.m., the bulk carrier 'Star Luster' collided with a power line while maneuvering between berths at Stockton port. The incident occurred when one of the vessel's cranes, fully extended, struck a high-voltage transmission line located over the channel, just east of the junction with the San Joaquin River, beyond the west end of West Fremont Street on the north side of the channel. The affected line was a 60 kilovolt transmission line, equipped with switches on either side to mitigate such occurrences. Consequently, more than 5,000 residents experienced a power outage, impacting areas from Highway 4 to Alpine Avenue, with lights out along the busy Highway 4 corridor. Crews from Pacific Gas and Electric Company worked diligently across multiple sites in the city to resolve the issues. Remarkably, within two hours, power was restored to over 2,000 customers, and by midday, all but 20 customers had their electricity reinstated.
